Running total of volume that follows price direction. Confirms price or shows divergence.
About
On-Balance Volume (OBV) is a running total of volume: add the bar's volume when the close is up, subtract it when the close is down. Rising OBV is buying pressure. Falling OBV is selling pressure.
When price and OBV rise together, volume confirms the move. When price makes a new high and OBV does not, the advance has less participation. The reverse applies to new lows.
In a mix, use OBV slope or a new OBV high as confirmation next to a breakout or moving-average entry, not as the only reason to trade.
